A Busy Junco

During the winter months we like to fill the bird feeder and watch as all of the "overwintering" birds help themselves to dinner.  We always have a lot of Dark Eyed Juncos, all different kinds of Sparrows, a few Blue Jays and Cardinals, and every once in awhile a Tufted Titmouse or a Nuthatch will show up.

On the warmer not-freeze-your-face-off days I like to bundle up and take my camera out to see if I can get some shots of the birds at the feeder.  This day was sorta in between the warmer and the freeze-your-face-off weather!

A Junco enjoying a Sunflower seed.

To capture these two pictures I was laying on my stomach in the driveway for thirty minutes waiting for some of the birds to get close enough.  I was finally able to get a few shots!  The rocks didn't make a very comfortable spot to wait, though!

Back in August of last year I purchased a new Nikon D7100.  At first I was having trouble with the focus, but after experimenting and reading through the instruction manual I figured out I could select where I wanted the camera to focus!  Most of you photographers out there probably already knew that, but oh well! ;)  These two pictures are from when I finally got that figured out!  I was so excited and was finally able to enjoy my camera more!

Here is a picture I snapped of my sister in her freeze-your-face-off-weather getup. :)  Luckily the sun was shining and the wind wasn't blowing too bad!

And here is the picture she took of me in my getup!  You always gotta carry an extra pair of insulated gloves! :)

How do you like to dress for cold winter photography?

Week 5: The End of January

It's the end of January.  I can't believe January 2013 has already come and gone.  Where did it go?  It seems like it has just flown by and I barely caught a glimpse of it as it passed.

A couple of days ago it rained.  It rained hard, we even had thunder and lightning and the wind was blowing something awful.  The next day it was pretty warm, as the day went on though it cooled off quite a bit.  Then it started raining again.  The rain turned to snow, and now we have 4 inches of snow on the ground.  It is 16*F and blustery outside.  But don't worry, this weekend it is supposed to get up to 48*F again.  The weather here is crazy!  You never know what to expect!  But I am thankful for the rain and the snow.

Hopefully this means we will have a wet summer and not a dry one like last year. This time last year we didn't hardly get any snow at all, let alone rain.  I know my vegetable garden would appreciate it.  I didn't do so good on watering it, and every time I did water, the water would run away from the plants on the top of the dirt because it was so dry!  I tried poking a few holes in the bottom of pop cans and setting them up next to each plant and filling them up with water, hoping the water would slowly sink in.  It worked on a few of them, but the water still ran out too fast on most of the cans.  This year I may try burying a tin can halfway next to each plant with the bottom and top cut off.  Then I will fill them with water as I did the pop cans.

Here is a picture from two years ago around this time in January.

Good-bye, January.  February, here we come!

How was your January?

A New Year: 2013

It's a new year, and with it comes resolutions of all kinds. Most of these are not kept more than a week. Well, for this year, I have made a few resolutions and goals myself. One of which I have already broken. That goal was to post a new picture on this blog every week for 52 weeks. I missed the first week and then the second week due to internet difficulties. To make up for that I am posting two new pictures. I plan to keep up on this from here on out, we'll see. It's kind of hard to post new pictures when the internet won't co-operate!

One reason I have chosen to do this is I am hoping it will help me get out and take more pictures, more frequently! Maybe it will help me go through them and edit them a little faster too! I tend to take a bunch of pictures and then not do anything with them. They don't do me any good just sitting on the computer!

Another reason for my resolution is, I NEVER post anything on here! I thought I would point that out since you probably didn't notice. ;) Now, on to the pictures.

Um, well, another bump in the road, I can't seem to get the picture uploader to work on here, so instead, here is a link to my Flickr. The images for the 52 Weeks are in a set of the same name.
Click here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bobbihphotos/ (A post with no pictures! It just doesn't seem right! Hopefully I can get that fixed.)

On a positive note, the weather today was awesome! 58 degrees in January! My youngest sister and I took advantage of the mild weather and went for a walk. It felt good to get out and stretch our legs. I think that is what makes winter bearable, a nice day once in a while.

Be sure to check out my Flickr page, it has a whole bunch of photos on it.

Be on the look out for a recipe post soon.

Leave a comment and let me know how the weather has been in your area.

More January 2011 Pictures

These are some more pictures taken last January.

This one of the branches was taken at night with a long shutter speed of 30 seconds. I used a tripod for this one.

I liked this one because of the snow falling, I think it adds to the picture!

The color, and blurred background are what I like about this picture.

Snowy frost on one of our evergreen trees.

Another of an evergreen tree, I think I like this one better!

A cornfield covered in snow in the dead of winter, and frosty trees in the background.

This is the same cornfield, I like the frosty blue trees!

Frosty barb-wire fence.

This picture makes it look like the wind was blowing really hard by the way the frost stands.

Lilac leaves in winter.

Hopefully I will have some more recent pictures up soon!
As I write this it is snowing outside, so far we have about 4-5 in. of snow! If I get pictures I will post them!
Thank you for taking a look! Feel free to comment!

Winter in January

These are a few pictures taken last January. I am kind of late in getting them up!
I hope to have the next Colorado post up soon, also.

One morning in January it was frosty, and the light shining through the frost on the trees was beautiful!

I thought this one looked neat in Black and White!

This was the sunrise on the frosty morning!

Trees in the snow.

These are our cows in the snow, not sure if they enjoyed it!

One of the first Bald Eagles I have seen this year. I haven't seen as many Bald Eagles this year as I did last year.

I liked the way the snow was sitting on top of the branches, just waiting to be blown off by a gust of wind!

I hope to get more pictures up soon, I will try to start posting once a week! But we will see what happens!

Winter

Here are a few pictures from this winter. We had quite a bit of snow this year. It all finally melted......and it just snowed 2 days ago, but it is supposed to melt in a couple of days!! I cannot wait until spring. There are a few flowers trying to poke their heads up out of the ground, and the trees are getting buds on them!!
Early one morning I took this picture of the moon, if you look closely you can see a little star to the right of the moon.
We had quite a bit of frost a couple of mornings, I had never seen any this long before.

This is a cardinal swooping down to the pile of bird feed on top of the snow.

Another cardinal waiting his turn.

This cardinal thinks the snow is a little deep!

Come back soon for some more recent pictures!
